Introduction Workshop and
Training Courses
“Lei Aloha” came to our founder, Louise Kleu, in a dream, after she spent the day in Pule to ask for guidance on her own
personal purpose & for her community, her ‘Ohana.
“When the name came to me, I felt it in my bones.
I asked permission from our ancestors to use this name for our training school.”
Our Training aims to encompass various aspects of Traditional Hawaiian Healing, which includes introduction to cultural & spiritual practices such as Oli, Hula, Mo’olelo, La’au Lapa’au, Protocol, Pule, as well as focussing on the bodywork of Lomi Lomi Nui AS PART of the whole system of Hawaiian Healing, of which Lomi Lomi is a part. In other words, our training is not a “massage training”, and will not exclude the practices that are ESSENTIAL to the spiritual practice of what Lomi Lomi actually is.
SuziSavanah is a proud transmitter of these traditions. Born in Australia, Suzi grew up with indigenous and pacific Island stories, art and cultural practices. SuziSavanah has also undertaken training in Indonesian Shamanism and Celtic Shamanism, all studied at source. Along with her background in Archaeology and Irish Slí an Anam (Path of Soul) infused with land, ancient spirituality and stories, she brings a depth of knowledge and wisdom from many lands and many lives to her trainings.

We will dive further into our Oli and what is Lomi Lomi so you can begin to develop your own intimate connection with this soulful led practice. Lomi Lomi is not just a modality of massage but it is a stewardship, not only of the cultural traditions from which it is a part, but as a stewardship of your own practice and the people that will come into the sacred space to receive Aloha. Level one will bring you deeper into Ke ahe makani o Aloha (the gently wafting breeze of love) and all the ways it flows across aina (land), kino (body) and iho (self). We will look at protocols and practices and begin our bodywork journey with the back of the body and the relevant anatomy you will be exploring as you work. This in-depth level one training offers world class resources and understanding of Lomi Lomi Nui, not only from the perspective of massage, but from the Source, that is the Hawaiian land itself, through the spiritual and cultural teachings that go hand in hand with the practice of Lomi Lomi.

WHAT IS HAWAIIAN HEALING & LOMI LOMI NUI TRAINING?
Training with Hālau Lei Aloha offers the opportunity for you to learn about Hawaiian Healing & Lomi Lomi bodywork that is rooted in the ancient Hawaiian culture. The foundation for this is the spiritual knowledge & consciousness, which we will spend time Embodying, so that we can be the vessel through which MANA can flow, the spiritual power of our ancestors. This includes learning some Oli (Hawaiian chants) and Pule (Hawaiian prayers) to develop our spiritual connection to Akua. We learn about coming into alignment with ourselves & this sacred practice, by following a Protocol of respect & ceremony. The bodywork is the vehicle for the delivery of mana and aloha.
To access this powerful healing energy, we may need to identify & let go of some of our own pohaku (stones) in our bowl of light, so that we can deliver the full potential of this healing work. Traditionally, this healing treatment was practiced within families, each with their own unique style, and passed on by the elder to a chosen family member to continue the lineage.
Lomi Lomi is rooted in ancient Polynesian knowledge and a unique way of thinking & seeing the world. Hawaiian consciousness & way of life, takes a long time & deep commitment to understand and connect with, because of the vast amount of knowledge (ʻike) that is held in the language (‘ōlelo), stories (mo’olelo), hula, oli (chants), pule (prayers), in the land (ʻāina) & people (kānaka).
The physical practice of the massage alone is not traditional Lomi Lomi. We need to explore Hawaiian consciousness, to get to the roots and foundation of what it is, where it comes from, and what is asked of us in order to be able to practice this work. This is especially important if we are non-Hawaiians. To have respect for this sacred work, we must have a connection with the kanaka, the source, the land, the stories, the language, the chants, the prayers, the Protocols, the way of thinking, the proverbs (‘ōlelo noʻeau), the dance, the myths & legends.
It is important to note that our training goes beyond learning the physical aspect of Lomi Lomi (just the bodywork techniques) and it will include the foundation of spiritual teachings, oli (chant), pule (prayer) & mo’olelo (stories).
These important cultural, spiritual practices cannot be separated from Lomi Lomi – they are the practices that give Lomi Lomi the MANA of OUR ANCESTORS.
IS THIS TRAINING RIGHT FOR ME?
Do you believe that the Great Mystery of Life brings things into your Life at the right place, the right time? Our ancestors guide us, and give us ho’ailona / signs that give us messages of guidance or significance.
This may be all you need to know before committing to further training.
The training is centered on practicing the powerful healing bodywork of Lomi Lomi, in the context of Hawaiian Healing. This means that the physical practice of the bodywork is just the tip of the iceberg! This is not a “massage technique” that belongs on a Spa menu, it is a sacred practice of ALOHA, infused with MANA / spiritual power (of our ancestors). We as therapists have to learn to “get out of our own way” to allow Spirit to move & guide us and our clients - that’s where the divine magic can have space to move. Our training offers you the opportunity to learn how to do this more effectively, to tap into your limitless potential, to move through fear & self-doubt, to harness your “Bowl of Light”!
People are drawn to this training for a variety of reasons. You may be a bodywork practitioner who feels there is a deeper way of connecting with clients. You may have no bodywork experience, though would like to know how to heal within your family unit or professional practice.
Previous bodywork experience such as massage, is not required to join this training. The requirements involve authentic willingness to be open to learn new ways of thinking and being, and to practice qualities such as respect (ho’ihi), honesty & truth (pono), responsibility (kuleana), patience (ho’omanawanui), humility (ha’a ha’a) and kindness (lokomaika’i).
In Hālau Lei Aloha, we have created training that is deep, rich and it goes down to the roots and into the Source. It goes further than just the bodywork and the way we train follows traditional Hawaiian protocols and asks of you a commitment that goes beyond the training days. To take on this training is to become a steward of the traditions. We always remain students of the practice, it never finishes. Not for our students and not for our teachers. When you study with us you become part of a Hālau (school) and the lei of Aloha (the circle of love) that becomes your ʻOhana and your community. Hālau is about the creation of a space for learning in which the Hā (many breaths) can come together to grow and thrive.
In our training with our esteemed Native Hawaiian educator, Kekuhi Keali’ikanakaole and her community, Lonoa Honua, our teachers learnt to become stewards of community, landscapes, culture, spirituality and stories. This is the kuleana (responsibility) with which we continue in our Hālau. We completed training with Lonoa Honua in Hawaiian Stewardship, Halau ‘Ohi’a, and continued this PILINA (relationship) by being invited on a PĀMAOMAO to Hawai’i island in 2023 to learn “Hawai’i Life Ways” and deepen our connection to The Source of this ancient wisdom. This sacred journey was an initiation for all of us teachers of our Halau Lei Aloha.
“Kekuhi Kealiʻikanakaole is an educator who has trained in the tradition of Hula ʻAihaʻa and Hula Pele, chant and ritual for 39 years under Hālau O Kekuhi, named for her grandmother, Edith Kekuhi Kanakaʻole. She was ritually elevated to the status of Kumu Hula (hula master) of Hālau o Kekuhi by her mother, Kumu Hula Pualani Kanahele, and her aunt, Kumu Hula Nalani Kanakaʻole.”
WHAT’S THE MANA & KAONA OF OUR NAME “HĀLAU LEI ALOHA”?
I ka ‘o'lelo no ke ola, i ka ‘o'lelo no ka make
In the word there is life, in the word there is death
This Hawaiian proverb, cited and translated by Mary Kawena Puku‘i, indicates the power of words, the “Mana I ke Leo”.
Hawaiian is a spiritual language, the ‘Ike is to be found by discovering the deeper, hidden (in plain sight) meanings of words and their root words. We understand & respect the integrity and impeccability that is necessary when using Hawaiian words.
We acknowledge the limitations of the depth of these other facets of Hawaiian Healing, that we can offer in our Hālau, therefore we have an extended community of teachers around the world, of different lineages, whom we have trained with ourselves, continue to train with, that we refer students to for deeper training in Oli, Hawaiian Spirituality, Hula and other aspects of Hawaiian healing and spirituality.
Our offering as a Halau (School) of Hawaiian Healing & Lomi Lomi Bodywork, is to deliver a pathway of training, consisting of various “levels”, taking students on an ever-deepening journey of mastering knowledge, experience & connection with these profound, indigenous teachings.
Each level of training varies in duration & content, with time in between to integrate, practice & assessment in order to progress to the next level of training. We offer additional support in between in-person trainings (via Zoom, emails or phone),
in order to give individual students whatever support or guidance they may need to progress.
Our Lineage
Our lineage source is Indigenous Hawaiian Kahuna, Kahu Abraham Kawai’i of Kauai. These teachings were brought to Louise Kleu through her first teacher Anthea Hardwick, whose teacher was Mette Sorensen. Louise Kleu continued her training & teacher training in “Kino Mana” with Susan Floyd, who was a close student of Abraham Kawai’i.
This lineage has been perpetuated by passing on the Teaching roles to myself and several other Kumu's and as such we honor the lineage through which our teaching is transmitted.
